The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath. I can’t believe I’m only getting to this book now. Clearly a major hole in my cultural literacy. My guy Pardis Parker, a very funny comedian I met at TED a few years ago, recently texted me about how much he loved it. It’s a novel about growing up, NYC, and madness. Pardis was right.
Aaron Hernandez: American Sports Story. On Hulu. My buddy Stu Zicherman made this show. It could easily have been a tawdry story about sports and murder, but instead delves deftly into sexuality, family trauma, and mental illness.

Sylvia Plath's ability to take you along into the madness in The Bell Jar is incredible. I read it young, and it was one of the first books that made me realize one of the hallmarks of incredible writing is somehow getting the reader all in on something that normally wouldn't make any sense.
