Hello, my fellow suffering beings. Every Friday, I’ll share two things I’m digging—books, TV shows, movies, music, and the like—plus one online video with nearly zero cultural merit.
Pachinko on Apple TV+. My wife and I recently started the first season of this historical epic. Which, aside from being extremely well-made, does two things for me. First, it is a reminder that earth-shattering events, like war and depression, all come and go. Like everything else. Another useful reminder comes from watching many generations of the same family over several decades. It gives you a sense for how we’re all part of the broad sweep of history. Season two of the show recently started.
Colin and Samir: I really love this podcast, made both for and by Internet creators. The creator economy is no small thing anymore; it’s a multi-billion dollar juggernaut. And now that I’m a part of it, these guys have been excellent guides to what is a Brave New World for me. I particularly like this episode about how to become a YouTuber.
And finally, an Easter egg for fans of The Office:

This book was on my mind this morning for some reason. I didn’t realize AppleTv + had made a series. It has been in my TBR pile for a while now. The series looks intriguing!
Pachinko the novel is wonderful too. I learned so much about the Japanese and Korean cultures. The complex family history keeps you reading. The book is long but such a worthwhile read.
