Either Mad Men or Community is my #1 show of all time. My wife and I did a Mad Men rewatch a couple years ago, and somehow it's even better on rewatch. "The Suitcase" in particular is my favorite episode of television of all time. I don't know how they crammed the entire spectrum of human emotion into 44 minutes of TV but wow, just stunning stuff.
And delighted to see you love The Watch as well! They were my entry into The Ringer, love Chris and Andy. I've been a bit more into movies than TV lately, and thus am also a devoted The Big Picture listener, shout out Dobb Mob.
Anyway hope Dan and anyone else reading this has a lovely weekend. You are a human being and you are loved. Remember this weekend to do the right thing, even if you don't feel like it.
Jude it's actually much easier on rewatch, believe it or not. While there is indeed a lot of suffering I had forgotten how absolutely hilarious much of the show is. And the writing is so beautiful.
Yes- definitely top 5 of all time! On my 4th rewatch of Mad Men. It can be painful to take in- just like real life, but I love the characters and I seem to find a new way to take them in and understand them and their foibles each time I watch. Great practice for real life. Was interesting to see how Betty’s struggles with mental health in that era were perceived and not kindly supported. Thankful for the all the support and tools available in this era (this includes you Dan!)🙂
I had 2 kids in the early 90's so TV was never on offer. But I remember hearing great things about Northern Exposure. It was a Prime Time Emmy winner. I am watching it for the first time over 30 years later and realize that the show was so ahead of it's time. It puts front and center what we are doing to the planet, culture bias, gender bias, racism, quotes from famous poets & writers that inspire true reflection. Season 4 Episode 12 even brings up the value of sitting in silence and the challenges we face with that. They don't call it meditation but if you have followed the show, you see that it's implied. We just didn't talk about it back then! Many, many Buddhist references in several episodes. So glad we have move forward on that...now if we could just save the planet...
Please don't ever get rid of "my fellow suffering beings" in the greetings. As a person who is quite familiar with Buddhist teachings the first time I ever heard it at the top of a show and the tone behind it I laughed and thought to myself niiiice bro now that is just perfect!
I loved Mad Men. It unfortunately started my fixation on MidMod design. Luckily, I am flea marketer and thrifter so my house looks shabby mid mod on a budget!
I am currently really enjoying Only Murders in the Building and Slow Horses. I heard Joseph likes spy novels. What does he think of Slow Horses, if he has even read them?
And cats. 🐈. Love cats. Childless cat ladies have more compassion in their little finger than …. Just going to leave it at that.
I have to add I deeply appreciate your sense of humor, “Happy Friday, my fellow suffering beings” made me laugh out loud. Love that this community exists.
I love you sharing these things, Dan. It enriches and adds things for me to potentially try out. Thanks! 😊

mad men was incredible but i think i'd find it too painful watching it again. there was so much damn suffering going on with those characters!

thanks, postjack. yeah, great writing. so poignant and vulnerable.
Love the cat video 🤣 Mad Men is on my list to watch!
lol! Loved the cats on the fish tank!!! Thanks for a Friday laugh💙
Will definitely check out that podcast.
P. S. Loved Succession!
I’m thinking maybe my all time faves are:
The wire
Succession
Mad men
Shogun
Parks and Rec
That’s just off the dome. With a little bit more thought, I think I could probably compile something more nuanced.
I know a lot of people put the Sopranos and breaking bad in there. While I love those shows, for me, they don’t quite make the tippy top of the list.
Loving the Friday fixations. Mad Men is great. The cats clip though… hilarious way to get a Friday rolling! “Ek!” 😂
Mad Men is so good. I wish it was on Netflix.
Mad Men! I've never watched. Thanks for the recommendation Dan. Big fan.
