Happy Friday, my fellow suffering beings. Each week, I share two things I’m digging right now (books, TV shows, movies, music, and the like) plus one online video of nearly zero cultural merit.
The Studio (Apple TV+). I’ve only had limited exposure to the inside workings of Hollywood, but this show feels incredibly/scarily accurate. It’s also really funny. And Seth Rogen’s wardrobe is oddly fascinating to me. Are double-breasted suits a thing again?
September 5 (streaming). As a veteran of ABC News, it was especially fascinating to watch this skillful/artful retelling of the live coverage of the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Even Peter Jennings is in it!
Behold a musical genius in action.
One last thing: Waking Up is a top-notch meditation app run by my friend Sam Harris, with amazing teachers and a ton of courses for all levels. If you buy a subscription via wakingup.com/tenpercent, you'll get a 30-day free trial (and you'll be supporting me and my team as well.) Full and partial scholarships are available.
Agree or disagree with these recommendations? Subscribers can comment on this and all other posts. You can also chat with me, my staff, pod guests, and one another. And there’s lots more: ad-free versions of my podcast; cheatsheets for every episode (which include time-stamped highlights and full transcripts); and twice-monthly live video sessions where I guide meditations and take questions. Our next session is Wednesday, April 23rd at 5:00PM ET. Join the party.
Taking this opportunity to say how much I enjoy your podcast; I am currently in a challenging African post and your conversations help keep me sane. It is also helpful to know that during a time of craven dominance by ignoramuses, smart, kind, thoughtful, and compassionate people like those you speak with do exist. Sometimes its hard to remember that, so thank you so much for exposing us to all this great thought. I am tremendously grateful. Thank you.
Hopping in here to say that The Studio is absolutely wonderful and hilarious. I was a PA for 3 years on many grueling projects and that show is the most accurate depiction of working in production with creatives and execs that I’ve ever seen
