How to be ok with intrusive thoughts and embarrassing urges
Day 2 of the New Year’s Meditation Challenge + a live check-in tonight at 7PM EST
The mind can be straight-up embarrassing. It’s a hatchery of intrusive thoughts, toxic judgments, and unspeakable urges. As I like to say, “The voice in my head is an asshole.”
What can you do about this?
Counterintuitively, one extremely effective answer is to sit still and observe your mind. In other words, to meditate.
It’s possible to learn to be okay with the inner onslaught—both on the cushion and in the rest of your life. If it can work for this fidgety, skeptical, ex-anchorman, it can work for you.
It’s day two of our free, 7-day New Year’s meditation challenge. (If you missed yesterday’s and want to start from the beginning, you can click here). Today’s meditation comes from my friend Sebene Selassie. It’s specifically designed to help you deal with uncomfortable thoughts.
Do the practice at your leisure and then join me tonight for a live check-in at 7:00 PM EST, via the Substack app. I’ll answer questions, commiserate, and encourage.
Also—tonight’s sesh is free for all subscribers. Thursday and Sunday sessions (also at 7:00PM EST) are for paid subscribers only. If you can’t afford a subscription, hit me up at free@danharris.com.
I just want to say thank you. There are so many people out there looking to only profit from this kind of thing and here you are helping people without the looming dollar sign surrounding your support. I appreciate it more than most as a mom of 6 trying to navigate healing from a rough childhood that is constantly being brought up through parenting. You are helping so many people. Thank you Dan!!!
Thank you Sebene. Beautiful. “Rest in your own presence,” will be my mantra today.
