This book was on my mind this morning for some reason. I didn’t realize AppleTv + had made a series. It has been in my TBR pile for a while now. The series looks intriguing!
Pachinko the novel is wonderful too. I learned so much about the Japanese and Korean cultures. The complex family history keeps you reading. The book is long but such a worthwhile read.
I subscribe because you pursue meditation and inner wellness. Now it seems like you want popular culture under your belt. My confusion continues with FRIDAY FIXATIONS, as fixations seems stuck repetitive and OCDish. Help me help me understand the new Dan Harris. I may be compleyely misunderstanding the new meditative direction.
On Fridays, Dan will share a couple of things he's enjoying to read, watch or listen to in his downtime. Appreciate the feedback on the word "fixations" - it was meant more playfully as things he's enjoying and wants to share.
AppleTV+ landed me into Chapter 9 for my free episode since I don’t have Apple TV+ but I miss it slightly.
I watched the recap of series. Wow. 😳
I will watch more later.
Interestingly and on another note, I always grew up with an actual pachinko machine in the basement of our home. I would play for hours. I would watch the metal balls dance on the pegs and feeling like life is a lot like a pachinko ball. Relaxing and fun 😊 Looking at the back of the machine and seeing how the machine was engineered was neat too.
Ok. I saw the rest of the Pachinko episode that I could watch for free. It is quite good.
That said, I shall not “Subscribe to keep watching”. Although Apple TV+ has great shows in it like Severance which I rewatch when possible, I have invested enough money into things lately like Substack subscriptions. 😉
There is a great movie from the 60's called "Harakiri" that is all about the dark era of feudal Japan in the 17th century, pre Meiji Restoration. The movie basically examines honor and the oxymoronic nature of tying one's life to the relatively arbitrary standards of honor that were instilled in the samurai. Its a little intense but I highly recommend it!
Thank you for the recommendation! I’m truly fascinated by that era in Japanese history. I will definitely check it out — when I’m in an appropriate headspace, of course :)
Pachinko! So happy to see you're interested, Dan! I went to the author's -- Min Jin Lee's -- reading & book signing at a little bookshop near my house the year Pachinko was published & have been awash in the series since it aired. I love it! I watched Season One twice waiting for Season 2. I also did a deep dive into the creation of the show's intro music & video, which is the ONLY show intro I NEVER skip. I feel so much joy watching & listening to the intro (for both seasons -- same Grass Roots, different song & new dances) and I believe that the perfect pairing of joy in the music & dancing balances with the hardships that are reflected in the story & show. As great as writing & production are, the musical intros might be the perfect cherry on top that allows us to be immersed in and to keep watching this deeply moving, vulnerable, and often tragic family saga. Can barely wait for Season 3 of Pachinko :)
I don't have appletv so I will miss this one but I do want to thank you for recommending Reservation Dogs at one of your early meditation parties with Sebene and Jeff. My husband and and I LOVED it! So much to say about the show and creators. Looking forward to future recommendations.

That’s so interesting about The Office.
Yes 😊

I love Pachinko (the book as well) and admire a lot about Japanese culture — aside from the all of the Suppuku and Harakiri and what not ;)
