Taking this opportunity to say how much I enjoy your podcast; I am currently in a challenging African post and your conversations help keep me sane. It is also helpful to know that during a time of craven dominance by ignoramuses, smart, kind, thoughtful, and compassionate people like those you speak with do exist. Sometimes its hard to remember that, so thank you so much for exposing us to all this great thought. I am tremendously grateful. Thank you.
Hopping in here to say that The Studio is absolutely wonderful and hilarious. I was a PA for 3 years on many grueling projects and that show is the most accurate depiction of working in production with creatives and execs that I’ve ever seen
Watched the Studio last night for the first time. Cringe making at times, but also very funny and probably pretty accurate. Another show (like my recent favorite "Ludwig") that is totally absorbing and lets me escape from my own reality for a while.
"Cringe making at times" I just started watching it as well. Overall I'm enjoying it, but every time I see him driving I want to scream at the tv "THAT'S NOT HOW YOU FOLD AN MGB SOFT TOP!" :-D
Thanks for these recommendations. I've been enjoying the Studio! And I look forward to the September 5th retelling. I always enjoy seeing musicians create. Check out my talented friend and multi-instrumentalist, Kevin Spears. He and I are playing for a dance tonight in Asheville! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POIffca6TrA
September 5 was outstanding. Just the sort of film I like - strong story, strong performances, important themes. Cohesive, not trying to be seven different things. It must have been a trip for you to watch.
Don’t mean this as a criticism of you but there’s something slightly irritating about being recommended Waking Up when I’m already a subscriber to Happier. I know you’re not involved with it any more and it’s been a source of pain, which sounds very horrible and I’m sorry for your experience with it. But it’s still essentially from my pov the same as when you were involved in it, so it feels a bit odd to hear you suddenly vehemently recommending a different app. I’m not doubting it’s good, because there can be multiple excellent meditation apps, and that’s a great thing. There’s just something uncomfortable in it for me and I wanted to point it out in case you’re not aware of how that might feel for the many people who I’m guessing like me are already subscribers to your old app. I’m not sure I fully understand why it peeves me and it’s only a small thing, just thought I’d mention. Huge fan of you, Dan.
Yeah, I agree it’s pretty weird! I am less annoyed though, I am just looking for a little support with mediation and am grateful for the help. I wish Waking Up provided a few samples without needing to sign up (my Happier subscription runs through November). And I miss Dan on the Happier app; it used to feel like a person was steering that ship, now it feels like an algorithm. The content is excellent, but it’s weird sorting through it all and I never liked watching the videos.
The truly weird thing is that I am (mostly) mediating on my own and the I don’t know (or have) other members of a sangha. Hell, I barely know what a sangha is — but I know it’s weird to practice on your own without the guidance of a teacher or minyan. (You know, other people). Just closing our eyes and listening to these teachers requires a lot of trust!
It would be good to have Dan talk about “virtual sanghas” and how this fits in or diverges from Buddhist practice.
Thank you for getting this conversation started :)
I tried to like The Studio, but Rogans character to too obtuse to enjoy. He’s frustratingly unself-aware and that makes it so implausible passes from humor to cringe. If they pulled back even a bit and let the characters breathe in their quirks rather than bludgeoning us with them, the show would be better.

Another great new show is Paradise (Hulu).
